Who is Jesus?

Today, the name Jesus evokes a wide range of thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. In our modern society, His true identity, message, mission, and promised return are often misunderstood or distorted.

The Bible affirms that all Scripture is inspired by God:

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

With this in mind, let’s turn to the Bible and learn who Jesus truly is.

Jesus is the Eternal Son of God

The Bible unequivocally declares that Jesus is God and affirms Jesus’ eternal existence and divine nature.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

Jesus proclaims that He is in unity with God the Father.

“I and the Father are one,” — John 10:30

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” — Colossians 1:15

“And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and [b]upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” — Hebrews 1:3

Jesus is the Creator

Jesus is also the agent of creation.

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.” — Colossians 1:16

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. — John 1:3

Jesus is the Promised Messiah or Christ (Anointed One)

Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.

“Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” — Isaiah 7:14

This was fulfilled in Jesus’ birth, demonstrating that He is the long-awaited Redeemer.

“Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”” — Matthew 1:22-23

Jesus is the Sacrificial Lamb

While He was here on earth, one of Jesus’ core missions was to save sinners.

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” — Luke 19:10

His sacrificial death on the cross was how He accomplished this mission.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

He (God the Father) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. — 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus is the Conqueror Over Death

The heart of the Gospel is Jesus’ atoning death, burial, and victorious resurrection.

“…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Jesus’ victory over death proves His deity and the efficacy of His sacrifice.

“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.” — 1 Corinthians 15:17

Because He lives, believers have the assurance of eternal life.

“… “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die…”  — John 11:25-26

Jesus is the Only Way to Salvation

Jesus Himself declared that He is the only way to be saved.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” — John 14:6

Salvation is found in Christ alone,

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12

Personal faith in Jesus Christ is the only means of reconciliation with God.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and [a]that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” — Ephesians 2:8-9

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. — Romans 5:1

Jesus is Lord and Coming King

Jesus is not only Savior but also Lord.

“For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” — Philippians 2:9-11

In the future, Jesus will return to establish His kingdom.

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.” — Revelation 22:12

Believers eagerly anticipate His return and the fulfillment of His promises.
